How it Works (Mechanism of Action):
Gemcitabine is a pyrimidine antimetabolite. It is metabolized inside cells to active diphosphate and triphosphate forms. The triphosphate form incorporates into DNA and halts chain elongation, while the diphosphate inhibits ribonucleotide reductase, thus blocking DNA synthesis. This dual action leads to cell death, particularly in rapidly dividing tumor cells.
