How it Works (Mechanism of Action):
Imatinib inhibits the BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, which is produced by the abnormal Philadelphia chromosome in CML.
  1. It also blocks c-KIT and PDGFR tyrosine kinases involved in GIST and other malignancies.
  2. By inhibiting these kinases, it stops cancer cell growth and induces apoptosis (programmed cell death).

Side Effects:

  1. Nausea, vomiting
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Swelling (edema), especially around eyes and ankles
  4. Fatigue
  5. Muscle cramps
  6. Skin rash
  7. Abdominal discomfort
Serious Side Effects:
  1. Bone marrow suppression (low blood counts)
  2. Liver toxicity
  3. Fluid retention in the lungs (pleural effusion)
  4. Heart failure (rare)
  5. Severe allergic reactions or skin conditions
  6. Gastrointestinal bleeding
  7. Infections due to low white cell count

Dosage (Typical Recommended Dose):
  1. CML (Chronic Phase): 400 mg once daily
  2. CML (Advanced Phase/Blast Crisis): 600 mg once daily
  3. GIST: 400–600 mg once daily depending on clinical response
  4. Dosage can be modified depending on patient’s response and tolerance

Method of Administration:
  1. Take orally with a glass of water
  2. Administer with food to minimize gastric irritation
  3. Swallow the tablet whole – do not crush or chew
  4. Take at the same time every day for best results

Precautions:
  1. Regular monitoring of blood counts, liver and kidney functions
  2. Use with caution in patients with cardiac or hepatic impairments

Overdose Information:

Missed Dose Instructions:
